What do Urban Soul Orchestra, Dior, Tiffany & Co and Harry Winston have in common?

When it comes to making an entrance, Urban Soul Orchestra know how to provide the ultimate wow factor. The world-class ensemble combines the energy of contemporary live performance with the refinement and poise of a classically trained symphony orchestra. The key to their success lies in the skill of musical director and composer Stephen Hussey combined with the business acumen and vision of co-director Natasha Beckman, who takes care of marketing, client relations and manages the corporate and weddings side of the business.When the House of Dior unveiled its luxury superstore on New Bond Street, Urban Soul Orchestra assembled an entire orchestra beneath the awnings enveloped in towering delphiniums. Natasha recalls the occasion:
“We worked closely with the client to curate a programme which was reflective of both their brand and the occasion including; Karl Jenkins Palladio, Elgar Serenade for Strings (Third Movement), Arvo Part - Summa, Max Richter Four Seasons Recomposed - Spring, Benjamin Britten - Simple Symphony: Two Movements, Satie - Gymnopedie No. 1 and Einaudi - I Giorni as performed in Santorini by Stephen as lead violinist: https://www.youtube.com
Dior’s impressive floral displays certainly set the scene and the orchestra looked chic in black suits and dresses. Natasha tells me they are often asked to complement the styling of an event.
“We take the presentation of the musicians very seriously as it needs to match the calibre of the events we work on,” she says. “We have a dedicated costumes page on our website so clients can choose what they would like our players to wear - from colour schemes, levels of formality depending on the nature of the event and even themed options from the 1920s to Best of British, Steam Punk and even Aviation, which came from a commission to create a new ensemble to celebrate the anniversary of Heathrow Airport.
“We also offer instrument changes for a different look and sound between sets such as acoustic, electro-acoustic (white) and electric violins. Once we were booked for an 18th birthday party on a private beach in Mykonos with an Ibiza white theme so we provided all-white instruments including strings, percussion and trumpet.”
Urban Soul Orchestra has been operating at the highest level of the UK music industry for the past 25 years, working with stadium giants such as Mick Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Groove Armada, Oasis and Take That. Recently they’ve added top industry artists such as Ella Eyre, Jess Glynne, Tom Odell and Liam Gallagher to their list of collaborators.
The ensemble specialises in live events, recording sessions, corporate parties, and statement weddings. They are favoured at distinguished wedding venues such as Claridge’s, The Savoy, The Corinthia Hotel and The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and are recommended in both the Tatler Party Guide and the Quintessentially Weddings Guide. Urban Soul Orchestra was voted the world’s premier event supplier at the Prestigious Star Awards.
The orchestra can provide your complete wedding soundtrack with a unique look and style for each part of your special day. You may wish to receive your wedding guests with a classical quartet and keep the mood smooth during the dinner reception with the Chill Out Set, followed by a roof-raising performance from the Little Big Band, Show Band or DJ Live to stir up the dance floor.
Urban Soul Orchestra have performed at luxury events such as The Cannes Film Festival, Monaco Grand Prix, Venice Biennale, Art Basel and Ascot Polo. They also perform each year at The LTA Wimbledon Ball at the Hurlingham Club. Luxury clients include Dior, Tiffany & Co and Harry Winston.
Natasha says: “One of our favourite luxury events was creating the music and providing an orchestra for the Launch of the BMW 7 Series in Munich. We worked closely with the client to represent key facets of the car such as innovation, precision, and beauty using different sections of the orchestra and to create an overall feeling of a new sense of luxury.”
The orchestra is currently on tour with its sizzling Classic Ibiza show. I ask Natasha to sum up the experience:
“We perform at many venues over the summer from stately homes to racecourses. One of the biggest joys of the show is looking around and seeing thousands of people from many different age groups all experiencing the joy of music. In terms of new arrangements, we vary the programme to keep the show fresh. Our key aim is always to connect with and engage with our audiences so each year we put out a Facebook poll and ask our fans what they would like to hear. The success of Classic Ibiza has been phenomenal, from one pilot show four years ago to twelve shows this year, performing to audiences of up to 10,000 people. We have just secured our first international show and look forward to doing more in the future.”
