Multi-award winning creative cake studio, The Frostery was founded in 2010 by Master Sugar Artist, Suzanne Thorp and has grown over the years into a small family of professional and artistic cake makers.
The Frostery name has become synonymous with cakes of luxurious detail, decorated with royal icing and arresting sugar flowers, or as Suzanne playfully describes them, Classic Wedding Cakes for the adventurous! The Frostery’s distinctive style is achieved by using traditional cake decorating techniques with original, contemporary design - connecting the old and the new with a unique style that delights their clients.
As one of the UK’s most exciting and creative cake studios, Suzanne and her team have an intuitive approach to cake design, using a freehand process to develop initial ideas with layers of depth and texture, allowing their designs to evolve as each cake is built.
With a fascination for heritage craftsmanship, Suzanne is passionate about using her knowledge of traditional cake decorating techniques to develop new ideas and evolve older style methods for a modern consumer - what she calls Modern Royal Icing; She believes that it’s this that will allow cake decorating to progress whilst keeping the important traditions and skills of older techniques alive.
More than just a symbol of a marriage, sharing a lavishly decorated wedding cake is a demonstration to family and friends of how much they are cherished. It’s this aspect of a wedding day which is often the most important to the couple and this is what motivates Suzanne to make the most delicious cakes using only carefully selected ingredients, ingredients that have been grown, nurtured and made with care. If craftsmanship is at the heart of The Frostery’s cakes, this is their soul. It’s what gives The Frostery team complete control over what they make and how they make it so they know that their cakes are the best that they can be.
Born into a family of bakers, cooks and farmers, Suzanne has a lifetime of experience and has been making wedding cakes professionally for over twenty-five years. After learning her craft at the family bakery, she studied the technical aspects of cake decoration at the highly regarded Salford College. Later she gained a certificate of education which enabled her to teach the art of cake decorating professionally and has passed on her wealth of knowledge to both children and adults.
Suzanne has appeared in four series of the award winning Channel 4 series, Extreme Cake Makers, following the stories of some of The Frostery’s more elaborate creations from a remembrance cake for Lloyds of London to The Frostery’s speciality wedding cakes, culminating in a celebration of the inventor of the modern wedding cake, Mrs Elizabeth Raffald. Recognised as one of the UK’s Top Ten Cake Artists, Suzanne’s expertise, experience and skill mean that she is in high demand as a competition judge. Regularly judging wedding cakes for the world’s largest cake competition - Cake International, her knowledge has recently been harnessed by The Baking Industry Awards, The Cake Professionals and Four Counties Wedding Awards.
Suzanne has been a proud ambassador for Kenwood since 2018 and is one of Kenwood’s Real Cooks, creating hassle free recipes to help and encourage home bakers of all levels to get the most of their baking.
