Kay Patel is the co-founder of Intricate Creations, a bespoke stationery company based in London.
Trained as a physiotherapist and then having a career change into event management, Kay was always striving for bigger and better things. After meeting her now-husband and business partner Jit, they decided to leave the rat race and travel the world. A bold move for two individuals moving up the career ladder at a rapid rate.
Whilst travelling around the world, she stumbled across an artist hand-cutting a card. She loved it so much that she purchased the card and sent it to a close friend back in London. When they returned, now engaged she knew she would not return to the safety of a 9 to 5 but wanted something of her own. Whilst planning her own wedding the card she purchased in Vietnam was perched on her friend’s mantelpiece and it was the detailed lace pattern cut on the card that made her want this as her own wedding invitations but could not find anyone that could achieve this - Intricate Creations was born.
When working on her own stationery she always felt limited. Many brides will probably empathise with Kay, she found elements of invitations she liked but something was always missing or not right – the design, the size, the materials and colours. Kay believes Intricate Creations grew to the company it is today as they have never restricted any of their clients, an ethos Intricate Creations still stands by – Anything is Possible. She now knew what she wanted and had to figure out how to achieve it. Along with Jit they plugged their life savings into buying machinery and designed their own invitations with the belief that the idea/techniques were truly unique and needed in the industry. After a further year of research and developing their designs, Intricate Creations finally launched in 2010.
Kay paved a way into the hugely competitive market with the mantra “go hard or go home”. She believes it is this motto that has driven Intricate Creations to be one of the leading stationery companies to work with. With their first order being just £200 they have quickly grown to serve clients from all walks of life including celebrities, sports stars, ultra-high-net-worth couples and royalty with some clients spending upwards of £50,000 on their wedding stationery. However, she hasn’t forgotten her humble beginning and the core values of Intricate Creations and tries to cater to every client that gets in touch.
To add to the chaos of running her own business, Kay recently gave birth to her son Kyle and is now juggling the joys of being a “mumpreneur” and a devoted wife.
